Current Position

Graduate Instructor—Freshman Composition

East Carolina University: 2014-2015

During the final two semesters of my assistantship program with ECU, I taught two sections of ENGL 1100: Foundations of College Writing. In this position, I worked with my colleagues and supervisors to draft syllabi and assignments, create weekly schedules of class activities, and manage blackboard. My classroom practices were designed to build student authority in their academic voices by helping them to see how their experiences and interests are relevant to their coursework. I also stressed the value of the classroom as a learning community, working adamantly to ensure equal discussion and encourage active conversation.

  • Writing Consultant

East Carolina University: 2013-2014

I worked in ECU’s first-year writing center for two semesters as part of my assistantship program. In this capacity, I was responsible for working with (primarily) freshman students as they composed projects for their first-year composition courses (ENGL 1100/1200.) I also facilitated classroom visits in which I discussed time management, plagiarism, organization and other skills with first-year students. I helped to schedule appointments, maintain communication with instructors, and conduct online tutoring sessions.

  • Tutor and QEP Writing Consultant

Elizabeth City State University: 2010-2012

For nearly two years, I worked as a consultant in ECSU’s ‘writing studio.’ This space functioned as a tutoring center set up to work alongside the institution’s quality enhancement plan. While employed in this position, I worked with students throughout all phases of the writing process as they composed assignments for their courses. I helped students to think through ideas, discover new ways of expression, and make final revisions to polished drafts. I was also responsible for the scheduling of appointments and proctoring assessment.

Organizations

  • Sigma Tau Delta International English Honors Society (2010-Present)

Profile and Objective

I am a recent English MA graduate looking to apply my passion for learning to the collegiate instruction of English. I desire to build upon my existing teaching and tutoring experience through employment with an accredited University or Two-Year College. I feel that my student-centric approach to teaching would be of benefit to any institution, and I am looking for opportunities to further evolve my pedagogical practices and make positive impacts in the lives of my students. I am especially interested in employment as an instructor for either freshman composition or basic writing courses.
