Exploring Modalities

As stated in your syllabus, one of your critical narratives this semester while have to be composed in a modality other than writing. Some of your options for this include digital composing (pictures, videos, and infographics, etc.), drawing (or other 2D handmade art), podcasts, or 3D physical representations, but you are not limited to one modality–you can use as many as you want!

This activity well help get you thinking about what modality or modalities you might want to use for your composition.

Activity

  • First, break into groups of 4-6. There should be a total of four groups. I will assign each group one modality that they have to use, but again, feel free to use as many as you would like.
  • Read through this Japanese woman’s experience with race & racism: http://www.experienceproject.com/stories/Experienced-Racism/478677
  • Then, think about how you could represent her story and experience through your modality.
  • You’ll have 30 minutes to read and create a representation of her story, during the last 20 minutes of class each group will explain their representation/composition, and what they like or did not like about the medium.
